The Irving Healthcare Foundation and Irving Family YMCA co-hosted the 2nd Annual Healthy Kid’s Day 5K and Fun Run on December 10 at the Irving Family YMCA.
More than 80 participants enjoyed the second-year event that raised $10,000 to benefit programs to reduce childhood and family obesity here in Irving. Overall female and male 5K winners were Andrea O’Neal and Everado Reyes, respectively.
“The money raised from this run will go directly to administering this hands-on program to shape not just individual, but entire an entire family’s approach to eating and exercise,” explains Irving Healthcare Foundation President John Drake.
Funds raised by the Dec. 10 event will help fund a series of eight-week programs throughout 2012 at the Irving Family YMCA. The series is named "Salsa, Sabor y Salud" and it is free, fun and family-focused. Classes are offered in both English and Spanish and include hands-on instruction with educational focus on deciphering nutrition facts, the importance of water and how to make healthy food choices every day. Participating families also receive a free six-month Irving Family YMCA membership to promote daily exercise. Contact the Irving Family YMCA to learn about this free program at (972) 986-8898.
Community members can also make tax-deductible gifts online to support programs to reduce childhood obesity.
